Responsibilities
In Field Missions, the Aviation Safety Unit is responsible for providing recommendation to the Mission’s management on all aviation safety related matters, promoting aviation safety awareness and implementing the mission aviation safety programmes. The Aviation Safety Unit is also responsible for identification of aviation hazards and participation in the risk evaluation and risk mitigation processes. The Unit is also responsible for processing of all occurrence and hazard reports, and identification of trends and investigation of incidents and accidents. The Aviation Safety Unit also coordinates and provides aviation safety related training/exercises/drills and prepares and distributes aviation safety awareness materials. Under the direct supervision of the Mission’s Chief Aviation Safety Officer (CASO) the Aviation Safety Officer shall be responsible for the following duties(The following duties are generic and may differ depending on the requirements of the mission.): As directed, Implementing the United Nations Headquarters (UNHQ) Aviation Safety Programme, and suggesting remedial measures to reduce the level of risk associated with mission’s air operations; implementing the mission’s Aviation Safety Programme, which includes but is not limited to: Promoting safety and safety awareness in the mission, Identifying aviation safety hazards, providing support on all Aviation Operational Risk Management issues, investigating occurrences and hazards, carrying out safety inspections, assessments and surveys, identifying safety trends, developing and following up on safety recommendations; conducting site-inspections, compiling of aviation statistics, maintaining and processing of all aircraft occurrence reports; Performing other duties as required. In those Missions where there is no CASO the Aviation Safety Officer will under the direct Supervision of the Director Mission Support (DMS) / Chief Mission Support (CMS) be responsible for: Providing advise to the Director Mission Support (DMS)/ Chief Mission Support (CMS) on all aviation safety related matters and implementing and managing the mission’s Aviation Safety Programme mentioned above. Conducting site-inspections, compiling of aviation statistics, maintaining and processing of all aircraft occurrence reports Identifying safety trends and participating in accident and incident investigation; Preparing and Distributing aviation safety literature, newsletters and consolidated reports to appropriate areas; Providing safety briefings and training, Preparing the Aviation Safety budget; performing other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
High school or equivalent diploma is required. Technical or vocational certificate in aviation and aviation safety -related activities (air operations, air traffic control, maintenance, dispatch, etc.), or graduation from equivalent military establishment or military flight/air traffic control training is required. Professional Pilot License (CPL, ATPL) or Engineering License or Air Traffic Controller license, is desirable.

Work Experience
At least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in an occupation directly related to air transport operations. Experience in Aviation Safety is required.

Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of French is an advantage.
