Responsibilities
This Generic Job Opening has been advertised to attract applications from qualified candidates, including serving staff in various Engineering functions or Engineering related positions such as Engineering Assistant, Generator Mechanic, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Technician, and Water and Sanitation Technician. Within delegated authority, the Engineering Technician will be responsible for the following duties: (These duties are generic, and may not be performed by all Engineering Technicians.) • Install, service, maintain and repair, in compliance with recognized standards and regulations pertaining to safety and installation codes, air-conditioning and refrigeration installations, electrical systems, generating sets or buildings, camps/sanitary infrastructures or other structures. • Diagnose technical faults and carry-out remedy for malfunctioning or defective air-conditioning and refrigeration installations, electrical systems, generating sets or buildings and infrastructure, including sanitary and structural installations. • Operate a wide variety of tools and power equipment including saws, drills, common workshop machinery, voltage testers, ohmmeters, oscilloscopes, welding/soldering equipment and other tools and equipment. • Perform diagnostics and preventive maintenance of air-conditioning and refrigeration installations, electrical systems, generating sets or buildings and infrastructure. • Perform technical or other assessments of air-conditioning and refrigeration installations, electrical systems, generating sets or buildings and infrastructure and prepare technical or other reports. • Maintain records relating to inventories, work orders and general correspondence. • Apply and ensure adherence to safety programmes related to the safe operation of air-conditioning and refrigeration installations, electrical systems, generating sets or power tools and equipment of the building and maintenance trade. • Conducting in-house training to tradesmen and artisans on the imaging technical skills in the new construction methods, installation of specialized equipment, fault finding and remedy. • Review and recommend for approval work orders and assign day to day repair and maintenance tasks to tradesmen and technicians being supervised. • Inspect and report on construction project work and maintenance work carried out either by contractors or tradesmen and staff under supervision, and ensure proper utilization of available resources • Read and interpret specifications and technical drawings, schedules, manuals for construction projects, installations and upgrade repair of infrastructure. Prepare bills of quantities and costing for infrastructure projects. Resolve problems; inspect quality of work and work performance. • Assist in carrying out technical assessments of existing buildings and infrastructure. • Assist in the preparation of cost estimates for infrastructure projects and maintenance programmes. Assist in technically evaluating bids and proposals for construction projects. • Provide inputs periodically for assessment of performance levels of assigned local and international staff. • Alert the Supervisor of Unit / Section of unusual occurrence and/or damage that have taken place or are likely to occur. • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or the Section Chief.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Technical or vocational certificate in a trade (air-conditioning, refrigeration, generator, power supply, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, welding, etc.) is required.

Work Experience
At least six (6) years of relevant experience in construction project implementation in a private, commercial or military environment, installing, servicing, maintaining and repairing air-conditioning and refrigeration installations, electrical systems, generating sets or buildings and infrastructure. Experience in international operations in a post conflict environment is desirable.

Languages
French and English are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
