Within delegated authority, the Senior/Chief Medical Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
• Undertakes day-to-day clinical duties, e.g. walk-in clinic, emergencies, coordinate/organize MEDEVACs as necessary.
• Undertake day-to-day occupational health duties: pre-placement and periodic medical examinations prepare UN staff for travelling providing immunizations, malaria prophylaxis, travel kits, etc.
• Coordinate and reinforce the referral network with the local specialists.
• Refers staff to outside specialists as necessary.
• Follows-up with outside specialists.
• Oversees and provides health education and health promotion programs.
• Organizes/Participates in addressing work environment and occupational health issues.
Medico Administrative Duties:
• Advises Administration and on United Nations medical standards.
• Assists Administration in drafting and implementation of business continuity and crises preparedness plans for the duty station/mission
• Advises and assists Administration on medical clearances (fitness for work) for national staff, sick leave, medical evacuations/repatriations, eligibility to a disability benefit, service incurred compensation claims, and medical insurance claims.
• Liaise with UN Dispensary Committee members and the Mission administration in all the related issues of the Medical Services.
• Supervises laboratory technicians and nurses; ensures availability of drugs and medical supplies and proper functioning of medical equipment.
• Ensures appropriate training programs are implemented in order to maintain and develop the medical capabilities (e.g. health education, HIV/AIDS prevention, first aid and CPR).
• Performs other related duties as required.
Work implies frequent interaction with the following:
Staff at large throughout the mission
Eligible dependants of the SM of Organizations at duty station.
Staff within work unit
Senior management throughout the Organization
All specialized agencies
Local and international specialists
Physicians and representatives of Laboratories, Pharmaceutical Companies, Medical Associations and Societies
Independent responsibility for overall planning and implementation of staff regulations and UN Medical Guidelines as they pertain to providing sound medical care to staff at large as well as their eligible dependants, in the field, and to promotion and maintenance of proper health care, including the prevention of health hazards, for these staff and their eligible dependants.
• Professionalism: Knowledge of clinical, occupational and tropical/travel medicine. Formal training in CPR and, preferably in BCLS and ACLS or equivalent emergency medical care. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations.

Advanced degree of Doctorate of Medicine; residency in one of medical specialties, preferably in internal medicine. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible clinical experience in one of the areas of medicine.
Fluency in both English and French (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of Spanish and/or Portuguese will be an advantage.
