Responsibilities
Under the general guidance and direct supervision of the Head of Mission (HOM), or by delegated authority of the Chief of Staff (COS), the Special Assistant will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties: Support the HOM in the implementation of the Mission's mandate, as provided by the Security Council; Keep the HOM informed on all matters requiring the HOM’s personal attention, assist in formulating options as to how those matters might be handled, and ensure appropriate follow-up, as directed; Coordinate/draft correspondence for the HOM’s signature, as well as other documents, including code cables; Serve as the Mission’s focal point for preparation of the quarterly reports of the Secretary-General to the Security Council, as well as other mandated or ad hoc reports; Develop and maintain constructive working relationships with public officials, political leaders and parties, civil society organizations, religious actors, rule of law institutions and other national and international partners; Organize and manage conferences, meetings, seminars, workshops and similar events, as requested through COS or directed by the HOM; Depending on the evolvement of the mission's mandate, the incumbent may coordinate actions related to the broader process of transition in Afghanistan, which may include more responsibilities in liaising with bilateral and multilateral stakeholders as well as with the UN Country Team, with a view to realizing improved coordination and greater synergy; Supervise, mentor and evaluate staff; Participate in the selection of staff; Undertake any special assignments as requested by the HOM or COS.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Political Science, Economics, Development, International Relations, Public Policy, Law, or a related field. A first level university degree with a relevant combination of academic qualifications and experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in political affairs, diplomacy, conflict resolution, development, or related field. Extensive experience in political outreach, facilitation, analysis, advice and reporting is required. At least two years of experience working in Afghanistan in a relevant capacity is required. Previous experience working in a UN Special Political Mission, Peacekeeping Operation, or other UN field operation in a conflict or post-conflict setting is required.

Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English is required; knowledge of Dari and/or Pashto is desirable.

  4. In completing the PHP, please note that all fields marked with an asterisk must be completed. Additionally, you are encouraged to fill in all relevant information required for a proper review of your profile.
  5. You may apply for all vacancies using the saved PHP. This PHP may be up-dated when necessary.

Your application will be screened and evaluated against the requirements set out in the vacancy announcement. In the event that you successfully complete the preliminary screening process, you will be contacted to further discuss your interest in working with UN peace operations. The next step would be consideration and interview for specific positions.

Because of the high volume of applications received, the screening process can take several months, so please do not become discouraged.
