Responsibilities
(The following duties are generic and may differ depending on the requirements of the mission.) Within delegated authority, the Chief Information Systems Officer manages the Information Technology Unit; • Plans and directs all major IT systems projects within the mission, monitors the progress of the design, installs and commissions various networks and systems; • Develops plans for feasibility assessment, requirements specification, design, development/implementation; • Manages the Information Technology Unit budget, formulates and monitors budget allocations and expenditures, verifies funding and ensures no overrun occurs; • Develops technical specifications for procurement/contractual services, and oversees technical evaluation of bids received; • Keeps abreast of developments in Information Technology and Systems; Provides leadership on introducing technological changes; • Provides professional leadership and work direction to the Information Technology Officers and other staff within the Unit; • Coordinates the individual yearly work plan and ongoing performance assessments for all staff within the Unit and produces; • Ensures effective coordination with other United Nations agencies, programmes, and offices in order to maximise possibilities of inter-agency collaboration in Information Systems and Technology; • Ensures highest level of customer service to all IT Unit clients; • Ensures adequate stocks in quantity and quality of equipment to meet customer’s demands in accordance with DPKO approved ratios; • Chief IT Unit may be required to take a ‘hands on’ approach in small DPKO missions participating at all levels of projects and their implementation. • Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
High school diploma or equivalent. Technical training in the field of Information Technology is highly desirable. Certifications in relevant areas of IT such as inter-networking, system administration and information management are an advantage.

Work Experience
At least 10 years (5 years with a bachelor degree) of progressively responsible professional experience in the planning, design and implementation of IT systems and networks in highly complex and large-scale operations. At least 10 years (5 years with a bachelor degree) of proven track record in managing and delivering highly complex projects; 4 years of which should be at the international level of the public/private sector, while functioning at management level. Field experience in United Nations Peacekeeping missions is highly desirable.

Languages
Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat - English or French, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

  3. Once you are registered on-line, complete and save your Personal History Profile (PHP).
  4. In completing the PHP, please note that all fields marked with an asterisk must be completed. Additionally, you are encouraged to fill in all relevant information required for a proper review of your profile.
  5. You may apply for all vacancies using the saved PHP. This PHP may be up-dated when necessary.

Your application will be screened and evaluated against the requirements set out in the vacancy announcement. In the event that you successfully complete the preliminary screening process, you will be contacted to further discuss your interest in working with UN peace operations. The next step would be consideration and interview for specific positions.

Because of the high volume of applications received, the screening process can take several months, so please do not become discouraged. Please know that your application to a generic vacancy announcement for a specific occupational group and your expression of interest in serving in specific locations or missions will enable you to be considered for all positions for which you are qualified.
