Responsibilities
Within limits of delegated authority, the Digital Communications Officer will be responsible for the following duties and functions: Manages the mission web presence, including website and social media channels; Ensures the promotion of UNAMA content and campaigns through UNHQ platforms, including UNTV, UN Corporate social media accounts and others as appropriate; Collaborates with colleagues in UNHQ for policy, branding, design and technical support; Alongside the Chief of Public Information develops and implements a digital communications strategy; Commissions, creates and updates timely, accurate and politically appropriate content for UNAMA’s digital channels including the development of multimedia story telling; Uses editorial judgement to ensure both mission and audience expectations are met; Co-ordinates closely with the media monitoring team to ensure monitoring of the digital landscape (eg. Blogs); Oversees and improves the newly designed Dari and Pashto web pages and checks suitability of reports, photos, and content; Provides technical guidance and innovative ideas for improving the new UNAMA multimedia web site which carries audio, photo, and video of documentary and drama; Performs other duties as assigned.

Competencies
Professionalism – Strong communication and analytical skills and ability to rapidly analyze and integrate diverse information from various multimedia and digital sources; up-to-date knowledge of current topics and issues and ability to identify public opportunities and reputational risks in Afghanistan; proven ability in digital news gathering, writing and editing to very tight deadlines; thorough knowledge of the UN system and keen awareness of the political sensitivities of inter-governmental processes, understanding of, and experience in dealing with the media; commitment to implementing the goal of gender equality by ensuring the equal participation and full involvement of women and men in all aspects of peace operations. Communication – Highly developed communication (spoken, presentation, digital) skills, including the ability to produce a variety of digital communication products in a clear and concise style. Planning and Organizing – Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priorities and adjusts, as required; allocates appropriate time and resources to complete work, allowing for contingencies; and, uses time efficiently. Technological Awareness – Fully proficient with all digital and multimedia platforms. Teamwork - Possess excellent and proven interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with people of various cultural backgrounds.



QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Advanced degree (Master degree or equivalent) in communications, journalism or public relations. Relevant combination of academic qualifications and experience in communcations, journalism or related field, may be acceptable in lieu of an advanced university degree. Technical training in web editorial desirable.

Work Experience
At least five years professional experience in communications, journalism or public relations. Peacekeeping experience required. Experience of digital communications including social media, in the context of Afghanistan, required. In-depth knowledge of the political and cultural sensitivities of working in Afghanistan, ideally in the transition period, required. Media relations experience and experience in radio or print journalism would be an asset.

Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English is essential.
